The Met Ball 2019

The Met Ball 2019

Those not obsessed with fashion like myself might find themselves wondering what the point of the Met Ball is and why everyone reposts the eccentric costumes throughout the next week. The Met Ball is annually held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The ball is a fundraising benefit for the Costume Institute. This year, the theme was Camp, and the color was pink complete with a pink carpet. Camp was a nod to Susan Sontag’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. The theme can be taken as literally or as figuratively as the party goer may like.

Kacey Musgraves wore Moschino. The design was a complete Barbie fantasy, adorn with a hairdryer handbag. The leather and zipper floor length gown was a retro Barbie dream. The silver hardware on the dress was accompanied by silver jewelry, purse chain and metallic pumps. The contrast of the soft fur and the leather was a perfect balance. Overall, this was a very constructed look and it fit Musgraves like a glove.

Brandon Maxwell designed Lady Gaga’s four pink carpet looks and might I say, hold the phone, these were incredible looks. The fuchsia parachute cape and huge headpiece screamed Gaga. The fabric of the cape was a great choice with it being so lightweight and took into consideration the many layers she had on. This totally fit her personality, and so did the next 3 looks to come being so unexpected and over the top. Maxwell nailed the theme and color for the Met Gala 2019.

The “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” actress Lana Condor, made her first Met Gala debut wearing Giambattista Valli Haute Couture. Her look has been compared to cotton candy tufts or graceful ballet tutus. This happened to be my personal favorite look of the night. The short design of the dress front made the gown easier to walk in, and still had the drama of the train to follow. This voluminous tulle explosion had a simple beauty to it and completely embodied the Camp theme.

I was lucky enough to be in New York City the week after the Met and saw the amazing Camp inspired windows at Bergdorf Goodman. The window shown below portrays the theme using other colors and inspiration, other than pink, pink and more pink.

Whether or not this years theme was your favorite, fashion history was surely made on the pink carpet. One day, I hope to have my fashion featured at the Met. But for now…

XOXO,
